Aussies & Social Business – the Perfect Partnership

February 13, 2021

The primary focus of social business is companies having a culture of giving back, making a difference, having a positive impact on the world. And that’s why it’s perfect for Aussies.

We’re a generous mob. We love to lend a hand, to pitch in and help a mate. Whenever someone’s doing it tough, we’re there. And when we’re asked to put our hands in our pockets, we dig deep. We give almost without thinking. Even young kids donate their precious pocket money or set up a lemonade stall to raise money. It’s ingrained in us.

On Christmas Day 1974 Cyclone Tracy, arguably the worst cyclone in Australia’s history, swept into Darwin and demolished almost everything in her path. It was horrific. I (Jo) was living there at the time.

Australians rallied around like never before. Despite the fact that it was Christmas and everyone just wanted to enjoy a couple of days with their families, Aussies dug deep and gave of their time, money and energy to help cyclone refugees.

Then in the summer of 2011, Brisbane experienced the worst floods in a very long time. Aussies rallied around. Businesses that hadn’t been affected by the flood, closed temporarily and the management and staff helped by doing whatever was needed. A huge amount of money was raised.

Fast forward to the last year or two. In 2019 our focus was on the farmers as they tried to survive the worst drought in recent history. And, our most recent example, the horrific bush fires that destroyed lives, homes, businesses, livestock and an extraordinary number of our native wildlife.

Again, we dug deep. All manner of activities were organised and ordinary folk, as well as world-renowned celebrities, lent a hand to take away some of the pain and heartache for those affected by this disaster. And the stories go on.

This passion for helping those in need almost encoded in every Aussie’s DNA.

And that’s why, as social businesses work to solve some of the world’s biggest problems, Aussies just want to be a part of it, to make a difference. Aussies and social business truly are a perfect partnership.
